"I used to forbid you from visiting graves, but now you should visit them, for surely they are reminders of the next life." (Muslim)

Certain restrictions :

Formal prayer is forbidden.

"All the earth is a masjid except graveyards and toilets." (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud)
"Pray in your houses; do not make them graveyards." (Bukhari, Muslim)

Purposely praying in the direction of graves.

"Do not pray towards graves not sit on them." (Muslim)

Recitation of Quran is not allowed, neither Muhammad nor his companions were known to do so. What was instructed was to give salams and a supplication for those buried (neither al Fatihah nor any other chapter in the Quran is allowed to be read).

"Do not make your houses graveyards, for verily satan flees from the house in which Surah al-Baqarah is read." (Muslim, Tirmidhi and Ahmad)

The prophet forbade the white washing of graves, the building of structures over them, writing on them, or raising them above ground level. He also taught that any structures should be torn down and the graves made level with the ground.

The building of masjids over graves was expressly forbidden by the prophet.

"May Allah's curse be on the Jews and Christians for taking the graves of their prophets as places of worship." (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu dawud and ad-Darimi)

Muhammad also forbade annual or seasonal gatherings even around his own grave.

"Do not make my grave an Eid, nor make your houses graveyards, and ask (Allah's) blessings for me wherever you may be, for they will reach me." (Abu Dawud)

Setting out on journeys to visit graves was also forbidden (as people in the Southeast Asia do concerning walisongo graves).

"Do not travel except to three masjids, Masjid Haram, the masjid of the Messenger, and al-Aqsa Masjid." (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, ab-Nasa'i, Tirmidhi and Ibnu Majah)

-extractions from the Fundamentals of Tawheed (Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips)
